Our Story of Lowville United methodist Church

Our Story of the Lowville United Methodist Church

The first Lowville Methodist religious services were held in 1798 at Landing Schoolhouse near Lowville.

February 1, 1823 the first Church (on the present site) was built. In 1862 it was replaced by the present church.

In 1888 the organ was taken from the gallery and placed behind the pulpit. Electric lights were installed.

In 1909 new stain glass windows were put in.

In 1915 the present Fellowship Hall was added.

May 16, 1929 the high spire was blown down. This was replaced with the present, much lower, spire.

New front steps, lights and doors were installed in 1961 and 1962. Also the present garage (attached to the Parsonage) was built by members of Mens Club.

1963 - 1965 rooms were made under the Sanctuary.

The Chancel was divided, dossal curtains and cross were added in 1970.

In 1998, join us in celebrating 200 years of Methodism in Lewis County, and 175 years as a local church.

Thus working in partnership with God, many things have been accomplished.
