The archives of the St. Lawrence County Historical Society are in a red barn building behind the Museum. One section is devoted to family information. They have a large index with most of the people that settled in St. Lawrence County listed there -where they settled and when they died. There is a listing of cemetaries that tells where a cemetary is located, who is buried there, when they died, and a sometimes a map of the cemetary. There is also a listing of geneological information and many diaries to look at. Most of the diaries are from the 1800s and some are illegible.
The photographs were interesting to look at. A lot of houses and stores that are here now weren't there in the 1800s and early 1900s. The statue in the park was there in the 1930s though and instead of the bank there was some store called Grand Union. There is also a large map hanging on the wall from the 18th century. The map showed the land people owned, local stores, farmland, and geological areas.
The archives also has information and artifacts about Henry Rushton. Rushton was a famous boatbuilder who lived in Canton. He made canvas canoes, strip-built canoes, and skiffs. He had his shop on the Grasse River which flows through Canton. His most popular model was called Indian Girl and was sturdy, light, and easy to control. Rushton is one of Canton's claims to fame.
