CLEMENTINE HUNTER, a famed primitive artist, stands near her murals upstairs in the African House. They make what Fiancoins Mignon has described as the most colorful room in Louisiana. For most of her years, Clementine lived on the plantation. working first in the fieds, then as cook at the big house, before devoting her time to painting.

The African House has been called the only structure of congo like architecture on the North American continent dating back to colonial times. The lower level of the unique building is constructed of brick baked on the place, while the upperstory is fashioned form thick hand-hewn cyperss with eaves that slope almost to the ground.
