Canton, New York |
Canton is a small quiet town in northern New York. Located in the foothills of the Adirondacks, the town was founded by Stillman Foote in 1801. Canton's two colleges, St. Lawrence University and SUNY Canton, along with the Kraft plant and Corning are some of the town's largest employers. Many notable personalities have been associated with Canton such as J. Henry Rushton (a canoe builder) and Frederic Remington (known for his "Western" art). Silas Wright, who served as Governor of New York state in 1844, lived in Canton. Today his house located on Main Street serves as a museum and the county historian's residence.
