Our town's railroad house is a historical place in our town. It was a part of the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad. The station was built in 1866. It was on Railroad Avenue which is off of Miami Avenue. The station was named after John Madeira. (The town is also named after him.) The station established Madeira. Madeira became an important stop because of its plentiful amount of water. This was because there was a well along the side of the tracks. The water was used to fill up the trains. The railroad was open twenty-four hours a day until the late 1940's. Many children had a chore of picking up pieces of dropped coal to bring home after the train left so they could heat their homes with it. The train tracks were also a favorite place to play because of the sweet tasting wild strawberries that grew alongside the tracks. Since there was no high school in Madeira, the older kids had to ride the train to Madisonville. The Train station was the hub of Madeira. Today the railroad station is known as Foster's Sweet Attractions. It is an Ice cream parlor/restaurant. Today many Madeira Schools students go there for afternoon treats. The Train Station is our historical landmark in our town.. Maybe someday you can visit our Train station and have some ice cream or some tasty food in this historical building.
