Visits the Political Memorabilia Exhibit
Silas Icon

Lincoln At the top of the stairs in the Silas Wright House is a room which contains collections from people in St. Lawrence County. That's why it's called "Around The County" and right now you can see the Political Memorabilia collection of county legislator Shawn Gray. Once you come into this room, it's amazing all the different colors, shapes, and sizes of stuff you see. All of the articles have faces or names of presidents and presidential candidates. There is a wall border of dishes with presidential face. On the back wall are license plates reading Roosevelt, Coolidge & Dawes, Hoover, Al Smith, Wilkie, and Landon. Washington

In a large display case there are dolls, coins, playing cards, matchbooks, statues and even toiletries. In one corner, you see an eye-catching hologram with a picture of Nixon and the statement "I'm for Nixon." Some of the items you can almost see being used. There is an old worn pocket watch fob with a picture of Taft on it. You can almost smell the perfume on the "Kennedy for President" handkerchief.

In one corner of the Political Memorabilia room, there is a display on Torchlight parades. These parades were one of the most popular means of campaigning in the late 1800's. People at these parades shouted slogans, sang campaign songs, and played songs composed especially for the candidates. People who marched in the parades carried flags, lanterns, torches, and banners to advertise the candidates and the issues.

When we are done, we all gather up and leave the room, walk down the stairs and go back into the houselike museum.
