The Importance of the Norwood Railroad

Norwood was a strategically prime spot for the Rutland and New York Central Railroads. The two roads interchanged here. The Rutland Railroad extended from the City of Ogdensburg, New York to Burlington, Vermont. The New York Central Railroad extended from Syracuse, New York to Massena, New York. In Massena, it connected with the Canadian National to continue the journey to Montreal.
Today, Conrail (now under the ownership of CSX Transportation) is traveling along the old New York Central tracks, continuing the same tradition. The old Rutland Railroad lines are abandoned, and pulled east of Norwood. A short line railroad, the St. Lawrence and Norwood Railroad, runs along the route from Ogdensburg to Norwood. The St. Lawrence and Norwood Railroad is now the New York and Ogdensburg Railway, a part of the Vermont Rail System family.
Besides Norwood, there are other important railroad landmarks in St. Lawrence County. To see a list of the depots in St. Lawrence County, visit the Existing Railroad Stations in New York State web site.
