The first ambulance service in Norfolk was begun in 1951 as a company of the Norfolk Fire Department. The first ambulance was a converted 1947 hearse donated to the department by local undertaker Ivan McLaughlin. The Fire department ran the ambulance service until 1981, at which time an independent rescue squad was formed. Today, Norfolk EMS provides advanced life - support services to the entire town with 2 modern ambulances and approximately 20 trained medics. During 2001, the Norfolk Volunteer Rescue Squad conducted a "Golden Anniversary Campaign", during it's 50th year of service to the community, to construct a new headquarters on Sedwick Street. This marked the first time in it's long history that the volunteers have had a place of their own to house the offices and ambulances on one site. |
