The Norfolk Fire Department was organized in 1916 with an initial membership of 40.
The first equipment was a Ford Model T pumper and a Packard Chemical Truck.

The department added members and equipment through the years, until today, when the Norfolk Volunteer
Fire Department boasts 3 fire stations, 62 member firefighters, 8 fire trucks and a rescue boat.

The department is now, and has always been, overseen by a board of Fire Commissioners,
elected by the general public.
