How to Uninstall and Reinstall DUN on win95

DUN(dial-up networking)

Often one runs into a situation where windows will ask them to uninstall and reinstall individual components of DUN. Or they have not yet installed DUN at all or they have a working system that decides not to work any more. Signs that one needs the info-contained herein are:

    1. A windows error msg. to uninstall and reinstall a component of DUN
    2. A windows error msg. that an essential file of the DUN is missing
    3. Errors on booting the computer about system registry referring to the following files:
    4. Vnetsup.vxd, nwlink.vxd, nwredir.vxd, nscl.vxd, vredir.vxd

(Most of these are for NetWare networking)

    5. When you have already reinstalled DUN and are still seeing the same problems that prompted the first reinstall

In the perfect world uninstalling and reinstalling the component in question is all that is needed. This is however the real world. For reasons unknown when one takes the obvious shortcuts available to this process windows will often not install all files or make the proper entries in the system registry.

First locate your Win95 files

Your Win95 files are most likely on a CD-ROM labeled win95. If you have an older computer they may be located on a stack of 13 or 26 3-½ inch floppies. Another place they may be found is on your hard drive.

To try and locate the cab files on your hard drive.

    1. Click on the Start button
    2. Click on Find
    3. Click on Files or folders
    4. In the Named field type the following: cab
    5. Click Find now
    6. In the Name column look for the files Win95_2 through Win95_26
    7. On a piece of paper write down the folder location for these files. It could be very important later. Ex: "C:\windows\options\cabs"

If you did not locate these files try contacting the person or company you bought the computer from. They are part of the package you bought with the computer.

Second the uninstall

    1. Close all programs and any windows you may have open.
    2. Click on the Start button
    3. Click on Shut Down
    4. Select Restart
    5. Click on Yes
    6. The first reboot is done to clear the system of any internal links to files that need to be removed such as rnapp or winsock.dll

    7. Click on Start
    8. Click on Settings
    9. Click on control panel
    10. Double click Add Remove Programs
    11. Select the Windows Setup Tab
    12. In the white field labeled Components. Select Communications (DO NOT click on the box to the left of communications that will only confuse a bad situation)
    13. In the lower right Click on details
    14. You should now have a new window labeled Communications. Remove checks from all boxes (Note: Removing the check from Dial-up Networking will remove checks from the components it is linked to. This is normal and to be expected.)
    15. Click OK
    16. Click OK
    17. If you get a window asking you to insert the Windows 95 disk. Make sure the disk is in the drive or you know the folder on your hard drive where the cab files reside.
    18. Click OK
    19. If you get a window saying a file can not be found don’t panic. In the bottom text field type the following: d:\win95 If your CD drive is not d: change d: to the letter for you drive. If your cab files are on the hard drive type the directory path you wrote on the sheet of paper in the first section of these instructions.
    20. Click OK
    21. A window may appear telling you that you have modified settings and should reboot if so click OK
    22. Double click on Network
    23. If the white field is blank that is good. If not select each item and click remove. Sometimes if third party adapters such as AOL are installed windows will not remove all of the drivers on its own. It is very important to get them all out now, as windows will not reinstall all necessary files if some of them are all ready in place.
    24. Click ok

Now you will need to shut down and restart the computer unless it has done so by itself.
