OCTOBER WINNER - The winner of NorthNet's Three Free Months Contest for the month of October was John Fuller of East Syracuse. Upon finding out that he won, Mr. Fuller said, "I find NorthNet a fine and inexpensive service with a technical staff that is patient and knowledgeable. Many Thanks."

The random drawing is held on the last day of each month, and all NorthNet residential customers are eligible.

WINDOWS XP - If you will be getting a computer with the Windows XP operating system do not use an old NorthNet CD to configure it for your NorthNet connection. It will not work, and may cause problems.

Instead, please use the configuration directions on our web page. Go to http://www.northnet.org , click on Tech Support and then on Windows XP.

WHO IS MAILER-DAEMON? - If you ever had an email message sent back to you by the NorthNet mail server you will have noticed that the message came from MAILER-DAEMON. Who is this person? Well, it is not a "he" but an "it." MAILER-DAEMON is our mail program. Along with your original message there will be a reason why the message could not be delivered.

The report will start with "Hi." This is the qmail-send program at aldus.northnet.org." "qmail-send" is the name of our mail delivery program.

The next few lines will tell you exactly what type of error was encountered. For example, the following lines indicate that the message got to "gotlaughs.com" but that host reported there was no such user as "updates:"
:
216.162.101.210 does not like recipient.
Remote host said: 550 ... User unknown
Giving up on 216.162.101.210.

The number 216.162.101.210 is the IP address of gotlaughs.com.

Other types of frequent errors are mis-typed domain names (the part after the "@") or spaces in an email address (email addresses cannot have spaces in them).

If you do not understand why the error occurred, forward the error message to help@northnet.org and we will try to provide an explanation.

WEBSITE CONTEST - NorthNet's second annual Website Contest is now under way as we reported in last month's newsletter. The contest officially wraps up on March 11, 2002 so there is still plenty of time for Northern New York high school and home schooled students to get involved.

NorthNet has, however, already started receiving entries. The following are comments about the contest made by some of the registered schools:

"We believe that it helps prepare us for future jobs. It give us the experience we need to find and finish jobs on time. It shows that we have responsibility and can achieve our goals." Beekmantown Central School

"It shows us the value in group work and providing valuable information for students and staff. Also to show pride in our school and what we are here for." Gouverneur Central School

To learn about the contest and how to get involved, simply go to: http://www.northnet.org/northnet/webcontest.html

YOUR COMMENTS - We at NorthNet enjoy hearing what you have to say about your service, and here are comments from just a few of our satisfied customers:

"I have enjoyed the service you have given me. I also have found the help at NorthNet is very good. When I needed the service, NorthNet provided me with all the information I needed and help I could get... Thanks again." Lynn S., Newton Falls

"I call maybe five times a year and every time the Tech Service Department has helped me solve my problems! You may not be big, but NorthNet is a great personal ISP." David H., Lake Placid

"I have had no trouble at all. I had a free service which came with my computer for about a month, but had many problems. Keep up the good work, and if I have a problem I will contact you. Thanks for the good service." Linda B., Sackets Harbor

"What a joy it has been to have you as our Internet provider this first summer that we have a computer with us. From the first phone call to establish our account; to my first phone call to John for help; to my recent call to temporarily suspend service while we return to Florida for nine months; your service has been human. I wish we could take you with us. Thank You!!"
Audrey S., Star Lake
