David was born on June 3, 1958 in St Johnsbury, Vermont, the second child of Harry and Phyllis Sherman, while his father was stationed at the nearby North Concord Air Force Station. When he was 13 months old, the family moved to Bitburg Air Base, Germany where they spent the next 2 1/2 years. Returning to the US, the family lived on Point-au-Roche, in Beekmantown NY, where Dave started school; and then at Plattsburgh AFB until June 1966 when they moved to Minot AFB, North Dakota. In May 1968, the family moved to Taiwan and lived in the city of Tainan for two years. Pease AFB, Portsmouth NH was the next assignment for a little more than one year. The family then moved to South Ryegate, VT while his father served a tour in Vietnam. Dave attended Blue Mountain High School during this time. Everyone then moved to Loring AFB in Limestone Maine, and then to Wade, Maine after his father's retirement from the Air Force.
Dave graduated from Washburn High School in Washburn, Maine in 1977. He immediately enlisted in the US Air Force. After basic at Lackland AFB, Texas, in September 1977, he trained as a Ground Radio Equipment Repairman at Keesler AFB, Mississippi. On completion of tech school in March 1978, he was assigned to Laughlin AFB, Texas. In January 1980, he was assigned overseas at Shemya AFB at the end of the Aleutian Island chain. In January 1981, he returned to the US and was assigned to the 42 Bomb Wing at Loring AFB, Maine from where he was honorably discharged in July 1981.
After leaving the Air Force, Dave was employed by RF Communications, a division of the Harris Corp, in Rochester NY as an Electronics Technician. In this job, he worked on the same cutting-edge radios that he had maintained in the service. He was able to provide valuable feedback to the company and made several suggestions that were adopted. As a reward, in 1984 he was assigned as a Field Technical Representative in Saudi Arabia, and worked closely with the Saudi armed forces. Dave left the company in 1987 to return to school where he studied computer programming.
Unfortunately, in February 1990 Dave was in an automobile accident that caused a severe head injury, and left him completely disabled. For the next 13 years, he resided at the Cedar Hedge Nursing Home in Rouses Point, NY, near his parent's home.
David passed away peacefully on August 19, 2003, surrounded by his family, at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, NY
