Pontiled US Customs Wool Storage Bottle; Clear; Rolled lip; 3-7/8” in diameter at outside of the lip X 12” tall; As a result of the Wool Act of 18?? all wool entering the country had to be authenticated so unscrupulous dealers couldn't claim a good provenance for their own wool, As a result the United States government had these jars blown and a set of them was given to each of several designated ports of entry for wool into the United States; Each set was stored in a case which resembled a barber shop mug shelf with a cubby hole for each mug; In this case the jars were stored horizontally with the pontiled base inserted first; The tops with the folded lip would be where you could see them from the front of the cabinet and they had sealed covers which had labels which repeated the information on the labels on the sides of the jars; Wool entering the country was compared to the wool samples in the jars to authenticate its provenance; This jar was purchased from an auction at the Ogdensburgh, NY Customs House about 20 years ago; They auctioned off the rack and about 100 jars, some of which had no labels or were broken; These are truly a bit of history and really belong in a museum; I have never heard of any from any of the other ports of entry into the country in the last half of the 18th century so it could be VERY RARE; The bottle has a couple open bubbles on the base and is otherwise mint; The label is extremely near mint as shown; The label says "CHINA / BALL WOOL / 3 / 75"; Some of the original contents remain. |
