THE WINNER IS...The winner of NorthNet's Three Free
Months Contest for the month of June was David Jackman of

Remember, the random drawing is held on the last
day of each month. All residential customers are eligible.
FRIENDS REFERRAL - NorthNet is now offering the Friends
Referral Program. In being a current NorthNet customer, if you
encourage a friend to sign up with NorthNet, you will receive
one month of free service. (Just think, the more friends you
sign up, the more free service you will receive!!)
All you have to do is take your friend to NorthNet's
home page at www.northnet.org and click on "Signing Up." Once
here, just go to the Friends Referral Program and fill out the
form.
Or, your friend may call the office at 1-800-401-6954
to sign up for the program. Just make sure they know your
User ID (e-mail address), so we are sure to give you credit for
the referral.
This is just another way that NorthNet would like to
show you, our customers, a sign of appreciation for your
continued support.

and be sure to have your student ID number available. All

SUMMER STORMS - Protect your hardware during a storm!
Lightning generates large power surges that can damage
computers whose electrical supplies are otherwise protected.
Here are some guidelines for lightning control:
- If possible, turn off and unplug computer systems during lightning
storms.
- Make sure that your backups are stored as far as possible
from the building's structural steel members.
- Surge suppressor outlet strips will not protect your system from
a direct strike, but may help if the storm is distant.
- In remote areas, modems are still damaged by lightning, even
though they are on lines equipped with lightning arresters. In these
areas, modems will benefit from additional lightning protection.
- Unplug your modem from the phone lines during a storm.
KITTEN ON THE KEYS? - If the keys are your computer's keypad,
that can be a problem.
Help is at hand with Pawsense:
http://www.bitboost.com/pawsense/index.html
"PawSense is a software utility that helps protect your
computer from cats. It detects and blocks most cat typing, and
also trains your cat to stay off the computer keyboard.
"Even while you use your other software, PawSense
constantly monitors keyboard activity. PawSense analyzes keypress
timings and combinations to distinguish cat typing from human typing.
PawSense normally recognizes a cat on the keyboard within one or
two pawsteps.
"Once a cat has been recognized, PawSense blocks the cat's
keyboard input. This keeps the cat from entering lots of commands to
your programs or operating system."
