NOVEMBER WINNER - The winner of NorthNet's Three Free Months Contest for the month of November was Susanna Stoffle of Glenfield.

The random drawing is held on the last day of each month and all residential NorthNet customers are eligible.

WORM ON THE LOOSE - There is a computer "worm" on the loose which travels as an email attachment. It has been given the name W32/Hybris.gen by McAfee and w32.hybris.gen by Norton. It is sent unknowingly by the infected user.

Play it safe: never, ever, open an email attachment other than a picture file. Also get a virus scanning program and keep it up to date.

Details about this worm are at: http://www.norton.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.hybris.gen.html and http://vil.lycos.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=98873

The infected email will present itself like this. It is safe to view this text part, just do not run the attachment which arrives with it.

Delete the message when you see it.
"From: Hahaha "
"Subject: Snowhite and the Seven Dwarfs - The REAL story!"
"Today, Snowhite was turning 18. The 7 Dwarfs always where very educated and polite with Snowhite. When they go out work at mornign, they promissed a *huge* surprise. Snowhite was anxious. Suddlently, the door open, and the Seven Dwarfs enter..."

WEBFEST CONTEST - NorthNet's first ever Webfest Contest is underway, and there is still plenty of time for Northern New York high schools to join in.

Some comments made so far by participating schools are: Madrid-Waddington:
"It will give our school more money for the computer lab and more recognition, and may help get me and my friend's name out around the computer industry and could help us in life."

Harrisville:
"We just wanted to have a little fun. The project will also count as a grade in our computer class. We thought that it would be a great idea and will help with a project grade."

Remember, the First Place Prize is $5,000 cash, Second Place is a certificate valued at $2,500 for a computer system, and Third Place is a computer zip drive and one dozen zip discs. All prizes will go to the high school of the winning teams.

To sign up for the contest and to read all the specifics, go to NorthNet's homepage at www.northnet.org The contest deadline is March 2001, so get your team together and enter today!
