OCTOBER WINNER - The winner of NorthNet's Three Free Months
Contest for the month of October was Michael Boyea of Constableville.
The random drawing is held on the last day of each month and
all NorthNet residential customers are eligible.
WEBFEST CONTEST - NorthNet is excited to announce we are hosting
our first ever web site development contest for northern New York high
school students. We believe this is not only an educational contest,
but one that will be a lot of fun.
The First Place Prize is $5,000 cash, Second Place is a certificate
valued at $2,500 for a computer system, and Third Place is a computer
zip drive and one dozen zip discs. All prizes will go to the high
school of the winning teams.
In addition, all participating students and team advisors will
receive a baseball hat with the NorthNet name and logo on it.
Each high school may enter one team - a team consists of no less
than two students, but no more than six students. And each team must be
supervised by a faculty member.
To read the specifics of the contest and to sign up, go to
NorthNet's home page at www.northnet.org, where you will be
told exactly where to find the information you're looking for.
The contest deadline is in March of 2001 - so now's the time to
get your team together and begin working on your site for the
NorthNet Webfest Contest.
COMPUTER SECURITY CONFERENCE - NorthNet is proud to announce we
will be co-sponsoring the "Computer Security Conference" hosted by
CITEC on November 27 and 28 at the Hilton Lake Placid Resort.
Fire walls, passwords, sharing violations, hackers, - even
companies who are not yet involved in e-business have serious issues to
address when it comes to Computer Security. In response to numerous
requests for information and training on this important issue, CITEC
is pleased to present a two-day, in-depth conference on Computer
Security in Lake Placid.
Considerable work has been done on improving the security of data and
network connections over the past 30 years. Internet-based systems have
specific security risks which are not common to other, traditional,
network approaches.
Systems based on a connection between an internal private Intranet
and the external public Internet defined by the term Extranet require
extensive protections against both external hackers and internal
man-contents. If a "web"-based system is created specifically to
support e-commerce, additional concerns over authentication
processes must be considered.
This seminar explores the basics of data and network security and
the protections needed to ensure that both simple Internet systems and
complex e-commerce systems are protected from a wide range of risks.
The cost is $200/person if registered before November 13, or
$275/person after November 13 (includes lunch and continental breakfast
both days). For more information, contact CITEC at 315-268-3778, or
check out their web site at www.citec.org

LEARN FROM THE NET - Personal Computing Columnist Reid Goldsborough
has some tips where you can turn to on the Internet to learn about the
Internet.
"Webmonkey, at http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/guides, isn't
extensive in scope, but it won't be overwhelming for beginners. It
links technical terms to a glossary and walks you through specific
procedures such as using the Net to find a job, manage your money,
plan a trip, and buy a car or home."
